IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is a manual approach using a set of soft tissue tools.  Some of the most effective tools are medical grade stainless steel.  These help clinicians effectively locate and treat soft tissue dysfunction, and in some cases the treatment of scarring.

The doctor uses these tools to apply sustained pressure or oscillating movements.  The tools provide a gliding effect on the skin and underlying structures that influence tissue tone and function.  Discrepancies in the tone of the tissues (whether overactive or inhibited) can put individuals at risk for injury or chronic pain.  IASTM refers to a technique that is proposed to remove adhesions or fibrosis from injured soft tissues and facilitate a healing process.
